Newcastle is one of the safest cities in the UK and a great place to study. Crime is relatively low here but you should still follow some simple steps to keep yourself and your property safe. When you arrive, you may need to register with the police. The visa you were issued with by the British Embassy in your country should tell you if you do.

To register you MUST make an appointment with Northumbria Police's Foreign Nationals Department.

You will be charged a registration fee which you must pay in cash (currently £34) and you also need:

• Two passport sized photographs
• Passport
• Enrolment paper or work permit
